Muhammad Siddiq Al-Minshawi (Arabic: محمد صديق المنشاوي; 20 January 1920 – 20 June 1969) was an Egyptian qari from a family of reciters. His recitation is known for its deep emotion and flawless tajweed, and he is often described as “the weeping voice”. He is one of the six reciters in the Muslim Chat Quran.
Early life
Al-Minshawi was born on 20 January 1920 in El-Minshah, in the Sohag region of Upper Egypt. His father, Siddiq Al-Minshawi, was himself a well-known reciter, and the son learned the Quran and its recitation at home and from the teachers of his region.
Career
His recordings for Egyptian radio made him famous across the Arab world. He travelled to recite in Indonesia, Syria, Jordan, Kuwait, Libya, Palestine and Saudi Arabia, and recited before President Gamal Abdel Nasser in 1959.
Recordings
Al-Minshawi recorded the complete Quran in both the murattal and the mujawwad styles. He also made a teaching recording in which children repeat each passage after him, so that young learners can follow a master reciter.
Death and legacy
He died on 20 June 1969, aged only 49. Many younger reciters have modelled their recitation on his, and he is named with Abdul Basit Abdus Samad, Mahmoud Khalil Al-Husary and Mustafa Ismail among the four great Egyptian reciters of his era.
Listening in Muslim Chat
In the Muslim Chat Quran, open any Surah and choose Al-Minshawi under Recitation: the Surah is recited ayah by ayah, the ayah being recited is highlighted on the Mushaf page, and the pages turn by themselves. The Surah pages of this website have the same choice. Listen to Al-Minshawi recite Surah Ya-Sin, Surah Ar-Rahman, Surah Al-Mulk, Surah Al-Kahf or Surah Al-Fatihah.
