Makki and Madani Surahs مكي ومدني

From the Muslim Chat Quran guide

The Surahs of the Holy Quran are known as Makki or Madani, according to whether they were revealed before or after the Prophet's ﷺ Hijrah from Makkah to Madinah.

Meaning

The Surahs revealed to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in Makkah, before the Hijrah to Madinah in 622, are called Makki (Meccan). Those revealed after the Hijrah — in and around Madinah, and even on journeys — are called Madani (Medinan). The names describe the time of revelation more than the place.

Makki Surahs

Makki Surahs are often short, with brief, powerful ayahs. They speak above all of faith in the One God, of the Day of Judgement, Paradise and Hell, and of the prophets who came before and their peoples. Most of the last Juz is Makki.

Madani Surahs

Madani Surahs are usually longer, with longer ayahs. Alongside faith, they guide the new Muslim community: worship, fasting and Hajj, marriage and family, trade, justice, and relations with others. Al-Baqarah, the longest Surah, is Madani.

How the scholars know

Whether a Surah is Makki or Madani is known from the reports of the Companions and the generation after them, and from its content. For a few Surahs the reports differ, so lists can vary slightly; a Surah may also contain individual ayahs revealed at another time.

In the list followed in Muslim Chat, 89 Surahs are Makki and 25 are Madani.
