Content
Ayat al-Kursi speaks of Allah alone: that He is the Ever-Living, who sustains all that exists; that neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him; that everything in the heavens and the earth belongs to Him; that He knows all that is before and behind His creation, while they grasp of His knowledge only what He wills; and that His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and preserving them does not tire Him. Its name comes from this word Kursi, often translated as “Footstool” or “Throne”.
Virtues
The Prophet ﷺ asked Ubayy ibn Ka'b which ayah in the Book of Allah is the greatest, and approved his answer: Ayat al-Kursi (Sahih Muslim 810). In a narration in Sahih al-Bukhari (2311), reciting it before sleeping is described as a protection through the night. Many Muslims also recite it after each obligatory prayer and in their morning and evening remembrance.
Place in the Quran
It is the 255th ayah of Surah Al-Baqarah, the longest Surah, and lies in the third Juz (Tilkar Rusul), which begins at 2:253. In the Madani Mushaf it is on page 42.
